Domain Registration

What is Msen's role in domain registration?

Msen handles the proper registration of domains for our clients. By policy Msen lists itself as the "Technical Contact" allowing us to maintain server information for the domain. The customer is listed as both "Administrative" and "Billing" contact.

The fees paid to Msen are:

  • included in the $100 setup fee for a business account,

  • or
  • $35 registration fee as a line item. (Ie. an email only domain)
Self registration by the user, with the InterNIC's online forms, does not negate this fee, as we have databases that must also be maintained for correct operation.
  • What is the InterNIC's role in domain registration?

The InterNIC is the agency that administers the Internet top-level domain names for COM, NET, EDU, GOV and ORG. The InterNIC serves several purposes:

    From http://rs.internic.net/about-rs.html

"Registration Services registers domains, assigns IP network numbers and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs), and produces the domain zone files for the community. Registration Services also provides assistance to users concerning policy and the status of their existing registration requests."

The InterNIC will bill you for any new domain registration, and for yearly maintenance fees.

    From a previous http://rs.internic.net/domain-info/billing-FAQ.html

"The cost for registering a new domain name in .com, .org, and .net is $100 (US). This fee covers the initial registration and updates to the domain name's database record for a period of two years. Following the initial two-year period, registrants will be charged $50 (US) annually, on the anniversary of the initial registration, to renew the domain name. The renewal fee also covers updates for that year. The registrant will be notified 60 days before this fee is due."

As of 4/1/98 the fees has been changed from an initial $100 to $70 and from an annual $50 to $35.

If you do not pay your registration fee, the InterNIC will stop announcing your domain and it will stop working.

Why do you get a bill from the InterNIC rather than Msen?

Because you are listed as the billing contact. The Domain Name is the property of you, the customer, and not Msen. Msen is happy to maintain NIC-related details, but we feel it is best to allow the customer to retain full control over the ownership of the domain.

What happens if you don't pay your InterNIC bill?

The InterNIC maintains the central database of domains for the COM, NET, EDU, GOV and ORG domains throughout the world. If they delete or disable a domain due to nonpayment there is nothing Msen is able to do that will make it functional.
